Kohiki is a Japanese pottery technique with a history dating back four to five hundred years. At that time, white porcelain was still reserved for royal dignitaries and official kilns. Japanese potters wanted to create more high-end white porcelain similar to Tang Dynasty objects, so they developed the Kohiki technique.
It involves using white pigment soil (usually chalk) and water to create a smooth and white surface on the pottery, similar to applying foundation. As more layers are added, the white becomes thicker and gradually approaches pure white. Then, a layer of transparent glaze is applied on top of the white makeup layer. This helps to soften the light reflecting off the surface of the pottery, and also makes the surface smoother and less absorbent.
Compared to white porcelain, ceramics made with the Kohiki technique may give a warmer and more approachable feeling.
